People are not the same – may be obvious, but true – and in any work team, there are a variety of styles, preferences, attitudes, skills, knowledge, etc. All these differences interact with each other and produce a different team behaviors. Ultimately, the effectiveness and efficiency of your team will depend on whether these differences together or against each other.

Thus, understanding the people in your team is of crucial importance. As a manager or executive, you need to know for each individual to bring to its best possible contribution to team performance. What role they should play in the team? What role they would like to play? What role would be best for them (and the team?) As always, these questions can discourage when a group of individuals that you have to turn into a functioning unit.
